3. Optional Formatting & Partitioning
IfyourneedschangewhenusingtheLaCieBox, youcanreformat your SATA 3. 5" hard drive to optimize it for use with Windows orMac, orforcross-platformuse. Forexample, ifyoupreviously formatted your drive to work with a Mac using HFS+, but now you want to share your hard disk with Windows users, you can reformatittoFAT32(MS-DOS). Toreformatyourdrive, follow theinstructionsinthissection. IMPORTANT INFO:Pleasecopyallcriticalorimportantdata fromtheLaCieBoxtoyourcomputer'sinternalharddriveoran external hard drive before reformatting. Reformatting will erase everythingfromtheSATAdiskwithintheLaCieBox. Ifyouhave datathatyouwanttoprotectorcontinuetouse, copythisinformationbeforereformatting.
File System Formats
Therearethreedifferentfilesystemformatcategories:NTFS, FAT 32(MS-DOS), andMacOSExtended(HFS+). Seethetablebelowformoreinformation.
Use NTFS if. . .
. . . you will be using the drive only with Windows XP, WindowsVista, orWindows7(performancewillgenerally be greater when compared to FAT 32). This file systemiscompatibleinreadonlymodewithMacOS 10. 3andhigher.
What is Formatting?
Whenadiskisformatted, thefollowingthingsoccur:theoperatingsystemerasesallofthebookkeepinginformationonthedisk, tests the disk to make sure that all of the sectors are reliable, marks bad sectors (i. e. , those that are scratched), and creates internaladdresstablesthatitlaterusestolocateinformation.

. . . youwillbeusingthedriveonMacsonly;performance will generally be greater when compared to FAT 32. ThisfilesystemisNOTcompatiblewithWindowsOS.

What is Partitioning?
Youcanalsodividetheharddiskintosections, calledpartitions. Apartitionisasectionoftheharddisk'sstoragecapacitythatis createdtocontainfilesanddata. Forinstance, youcouldcreate threepartitionsonyourdrive:onepartitionforyourofficedocuments, oneasabackup, andoneforyourmultimediafiles. Or, if youwillbesharingthedrivewithanotherpersoninyourhousehold or office, you can create a partition for each person who usesthedrive. Partitioningisoptional.

The process of formatting a drive on a computer running WindowsXP, WindowsVista, orWindows7consistsoftwosteps:(1) installingasignatureonthedrive, and(2)formattingthedrive. CAUTION:Followingthesestepswilleraseeverythingfromthe LaCieBox. Itisveryimportanttobackupallinformationthatyou wanttoprotectorcontinuetousebeforeperformingthesesteps. From the "Computer Management" window, select Disk Management(locatedbelowtheStoragegroup). SeeFig. Ifthe"InitializeandConvertDiskWizard"windowappears, clickCancel. WindowswilllisttheHardDisksthatareinstalledonthesystem. LocatetheSATAdiskhousedwithintheLaCieBox. RightclicktheiconandselectInitialize.
