Congratulations on your purchase of the Yamaha XV250/XV250C. This model is the result of Yamaha's vast experience in the production of fine sporting, touring, and pacesetting racing machines. It represents the high degree of craftsmanship and reliability that have made Yamaha a leader in these fields. This manual will give you an understanding of the operation, inspection, and basic maintenance of this motorcycle. [. . . ] Add the specified amount of the recommended engine oil, and then install and tighten the oil filler cap.
Recommended engine oil: See page 8-1. Oil quantity: With oil filter element replacement: 1. 60 L (1. 69 US qt) (1. 41 Imp. qt) Without oil filter element replacement: 1. 40 L (1. 48 US qt) (1. 23 Imp. qt)

1. Start the engine, and then let it idle for several minutes while checking it for oil leakage. If oil is leaking, immediately turn the engine off and check for the cause. Turn the engine off, and then check the oil level and correct it if necessary.
6. Install the oil filter element cover by installing the bolts, then tightening them to the specified torque. 6
Tightening torque: Oil filter element cover bolt: 7 Nm (0. 7 m·kgf, 5. 1 ft·lbf)

NOTE: Make sure that the O-ring is properly seated. Install the engine oil drain bolt, and then tighten it to the specified torque.
In order to prevent clutch slippage (since the engine oil also lubricates the clutch), do not mix any chemical additives. Do not use oils with a diesel specification of "CD" or oils of a higher quality than specified. In addition, do not use oils labeled "ENERGY CONSERVING II" or higher.

Cleaning the air filter element
The air filter element should be cleaned at the intervals specified in the periodic maintenance and lubrication chart. Clean the air filter element more frequently if you are riding in unusually wet or dusty areas. Disconnect the hoses from the air filter case, and then remove the air filter case.

5. Remove the sponge material from the air filter element frame, clean it with solvent, and then squeeze the remaining solvent out. Insert the element into the air filter case, and then tighten the wing nut.

Adjusting the carburetor
The carburetor is an important part of the engine and its emission control system, which requires very sophisticated adjustment. Therefore, carburetor adjustments should be left to Yamaha dealer, who has the necessary professional knowledge and experience.

1. Air filter element frame
Make sure that the air filter element is properly seated in the air filter case. The engine should never be operated without the air filter element installed, otherwise the piston(s) and/or cylinder(s) may become excessively worn.
6. Apply oil of the recommended type to the entire surface of the sponge material, and then squeeze the excess oil out. NOTE: The air filter element should be wet but not dripping.
Recommended oil: Yamaha foam air filter oil or other quality air filter oil
9. Install the air filter case onto the air filter joint, and then tighten the air filter joint clamp screw. Install the bolts.
